Let's distinguish between the draft standard library and the STL. The
STL as I downloaded it from HP some years ago (that's what I wrote
about) didn't require member templates. I learnt a lot about template
programming looking through that code.
I agree that I don't need to understand every detail of an
implementation of the draft standard container/iterator/algorithm
library. But looking through some key features like traits can tell
you a lot, too.
