| subject: | OS/2 crash-proof? |
MAJ>The best way to make OS/2 more stable is to take out all the code MAJ>contortions needed to run DOS/Windows and make OS/2 a protected mode MAJ>only OS. MAJ>Step 1: Remove any DOS/Windows references from CONFIG.SYS. MAJ>Step 2: Delete C:\OS2\MDOS directory and any subdirectories. MAJ>Step 3: Insert PROTECTONLY=YES into CONFIG.SYS MAJ>Not only is OS/2 more stable and faster, but it takes up significantly MAJ>less hard drive space this way also. MAJ>Step 4: Replace DOS/Windows apps which will no longer run with OS/2 MAJ>apps. Ah... if only we could! Unfortunately there are a *lot* of DOS/Win apps for which there is no OS/2 equivalent that is: 1. reliable enough 2. cheap enough 3. data-compatible 4. shipping *now* Sad but true... time will tell if the situation is going to improve but in the meantime, apart from a few specific cases most OS/2 users are forced to run DOS and/or Windows apps. It's this support for DOS/Win apps that has allowed OS/2 to gain the support it has. Look at just how unpopular OS/2 1.x was! --- Enigmax v1.04a* Origin: === Enigma BBS, Akld, NZ. +64 9 480-0951 === (3:772/350) SEEN-BY: 12/2442 54/54 620/243 622/407 623/630 624/50 632/339 348 640/715 820 SEEN-BY: 670/215 690/347 660 700/31 711/409 410 413 430 807 808 809 934 942 SEEN-BY: 712/353 623 713/888 770/115 771/1320 772/1 20 140 207 350 380 555 SEEN-BY: 774/605 800/1 @PATH: 772/350 20 712/353 711/409 54/54 711/808 809 934 |
