I just started playing with chatzilla this past week myself.  I
agree with some of the problems you had with getting started.

One thing.  Are you typing the commands in the correct window? 
When I start I have 2 windows.  One - Client.  The other - The
server window.  There are tabs at the above the commaneline and I
note if I try to type when I am in the wrong window, then nothing
happens.

If I type /list when on the server page then it works. 

On the chatzilla help screen I am using Mozilla 0.9.4
