IMHO, manufacturers issue ECNs (engineering change notice, or whatever),
bug fixes, design update, design change, and so on to not only improve
product for better customer experience, but also lower cost.
One way of lowering cost is to make the product more reliable, so
there's less repair/replace cost, and less support cost.
And that apperantly is what Seagate did with their HDD. I used to avoid
them like plague, but now I only use Seagate's barracuda line. because
so far it's been quite good, and about the quietest drive around.
I'm happly chugging along with a Seagate Barracuda 400GB, intel Core2Duo
E6400 4MB L2 ES (one cool thing in Taiwan is that Engineering Sample
CPUs are easily aquired at much lower cost), and Asus P5W64 WS Pro...
for some reason I suspect that both the board and the CPU are either
samples or employee deals, as both comes bare with nothing except
protective bags.
Anyways, it works well now, and it finally dawned on me that it takes at
least 2 CPUs to make Windows 2000/XP run smoothly, their stupid I/O code
is tying the system up... Ugh...
