RF>This is a seperate msg to draw a conclusion to our posts (hopefully). I
RF>would like to ask you a few questions so we may draw some conclusion to
RF>your msgs.
RF>1. You have repeated stated that ADHD, alcoholism and diet are related.
RF> What about most of us here who do not have alcoholism in the family?
RF> Your statements suggest we should put our children on diets anyway.
I have repeatedly said that this falls into the mental health area which
I refuse to get into. It is occupied by those who don't have to take
hard sciences and there isn't much that I find in some of the papers I
read which is at all newer than that published some 20-50 years ago.
I started out in alcoholim, then started to look for answers to some of
the problems that are fairly common in that population. One of them is
allergies, food allergies. That point has been kicked back and forth
ever since the first issue of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous was
published in 1939 when some 100 people abandoned what most of the
doctors were telling them and helped each other to get and stay sober.
The letters from Dr. Silkworth have been published in every edition of
that book since. His letters are the first to mention anything in the
alternative medicine field for something that was once considered to be
a mental or emotional or religious problem.
Today those same 100 alcoholics have grown to be in every nation on
earth, have gone from the program of Alcoholics Anonymous into research
and treatment of others. They did this in spite of the medical ideas
which said that they could not be helped. In spite of the medical ideas
in this nation on mental illness which were and sometimes still are,
vastly different from those in England and Europe.
I know that mental health is an outdated phrase which means nothing at
all any more. Those who are knowledgeable are in the field of mental
Illness and using the same kind of knowledge that those in the field of
chemical addiction have been using for years.
That is the link. In brain chemistry and diet.
RF> Is this conclusion correct or are you ONLY referring to those who
RF> have alcoholism in the family?
I am keeping my remarks on what I know to those who have alcoholism in
the family. I am stating that I am finding this is not true of the same
kind of comments I find on the net.
RF>2. If I had a Great Great Grandmother who was an alcoholic, would
it RF> it affect my children? If the child's DNA comes from both
parents RF> and they are not alcoholics than how easy would this
tendency for RF> alcoholism be? Please explain in relation to ADHD.
Alcoholism is sort of like the white and black mice you were supposed to
learn about in high school biology. If the genetic codes that are the
precursors for alcoholism were not passed down in your family, then it
does not affect your children at all. There are however, families where
all of the children are considered at risk. Then all of the children
are affected.
If some of the children in those families are thought to have the
symptoms of ADD, it is the opinion of those who are considered to be
experts in addiction that they NEED TO BE TREATED FIRST FOR THE
ALCOHOLISM and related problems, second for whatever is left afterwards.
The worst type of person to deal with is an untreated alcoholic who has
never, ever had a drink. They are usually associated with some sort of
religion which allows them to believe they are always right and other
folks are always wrong.
RF>3. Are you or are you not
against medication for those who do not have RF> alcoholism in the
family?
I am for those folks finding the best medical and other help they can
find. The opinion varies in the net articles I have read on meds. Some
of them don't like the Ritalin at all and are trying alternative drugs.
I won't comment on this as I just don't have the time to learn anything
at all about them. If I had a child in that category, I would damn sure
be downloading all I could find on it which is considerable.
You have never really made this clear. RF> And the meds used
for ADHD that children who have a tendency for RF> alcoholism, how
does the meds affect them? Please try to give a RF> real medical
explaination such as the effect of the chemical itself.
ANY DRUG will use the same enzyme system in the body for metabolism and
excretion. We are aware that the enzyme system of children of
alcoholics is lacking so called "normal" levels of neurotransmitters
BEFORE they start drinking. ANY DRUG use will lead to those being
depleted, be it Ritalin, alcohol, antibiotics, or even some foods.
That is why using ANY DRUG in these kids that isn't necessary will lead
to that body system being damaged just as certainly as it will if they
get into drugs or alcohol.
RF>Since this is an ADHD echo area we are only concerned with what
affects RF>ADHD. I don't need to know what or what does not work with
children that RF>are FAS (unless they are also ADHD) or about Down
Syndrome. I only need RF>to know what effects my child according to
what disorder they have. This RF>is why I am in this echo and I am not
in the alcohol, child abuse, or Down RF>Syndrome echo.
You are unable, as are most mental health professionals, to link a fact
from one area to a fact in another. That is why the mental health
people will shortly sit in empty offices while those who understand
mental illness are becoming overwhelmed.
And why children continue to be damaged by well meaning folks with
blinders on their faces.
We have huge institutions with one small group doing some very good work
with a few humans. Down the hall or on another floor, we also have some
other humans who would benefit from the use of a computer to assist in
generating new neural pathways in recovery from cocaine use who are not
in the care of the first group. So they do not get something that would
speed their recovery.
Parents are supposed to be more concerned about their children than the
professionals who cannot see around corners or down to another floor.
