RKF> >a 90 horse inboard OMC motor and an OMC outdrive I'm told it's one of
Joe,
For the record, many of the parts incorporated on that engine are
interchangable (Exact) with the OMC (Johnson/Evinrude) V/4 outboards
that were equipped with automotive type ignition. I'm speaking of the
powerhead itself, not the outdrive. I have many of these items in stock,
but unfortunately my home/garage/property has fell into a hole (A common
problem in Florida), and everything at the present time is in storage
and next to impossible to get at. I expect to be back to normal within a
couple months though. Many of the Johnson/Evinrude dealers should be
able to help you out with anything you might need as most of these parts
are still available.
You spoke of the dist cap and rotor a short time ago. The cap and
rotor should interchange with no problem. Note that there are two (2)
rotors that look similar but are quite different in operation. The rotor
for the automotive type ignition model has a squared off tip and if
memory serves me right, the part number is 580338 (Or 580388 - I
obviously don't have the books here with me). The other rotor is for the
old magneto V/4 engines and the tip looks like a elongated hook of
sorts, do not use this type as it will give you problems.
One simple problem that you will not find any mention of in any
trouble shooting manual, that will cause erratic operation pertaining to
ignition is...When installing a new condenser, make sure that the lead
that connects to the points, is pushed down as far as possible towards
the breaker point plate (Not sticking up). If it's not...there's a very
good chance that the rotor will fire to the condenser lead rather than
to the dist cap terminal (Been there).
If the local dealers can help you, fine...if not, keep in touch from
time to time and I'll help as much as possible after I'm back to normal.
