Good advice.  Also, what comm drivers are you using?  If you're using the SIO
drivers, make sure that the share switch is turned on.  It's the dash at the 
end of your sio.sys entry in your config.sys.
ex: DEVICE=C:\SIO\SIO.SYS (COM2:115200,2F8,IRQ3,-)  <---share switch
