subject: Merc Stern Drive (Type 1)

I have a Mercruiser Stern Drive (Type 1). I have a Clymer repair manual
which doesn't explain how to set and insure that the drive is in Forward
gear before reinstallation of the drive unit to the boat. The step says
"Position the intermediate shift shaft coupler straight ahead. Drive Unit
must be in forward gear position." It's not clear to me where this
coupler is as the part is not identified in the illustrations and pictures.
I further assume that in the statement positioning the 'intermediate shift
shaft coupler' straight ahead will in deed put the drive unit in forward
gear. Does anyone have any insight into this re-installation process?
Sure could use some advice! Any help would be appreciated!!!
