The patch to be solarized has to have every bit of vegetation removed.
Unless it has recently rained, water it, then cover with the plastic.
Leave under a hot summer sun 4-6 weeks. Add more water to patch if
you don't notice sufficient condensation during the heat of the day.
After several weeks, you have an essentially sterile piece of soil.
Anything in the top 6 inches has either migrated, or been steamed to
death. Planting French marigolds in and among your crop plantings and
all the way around the borders of that plot will keep nematode
reinfestation to a minimum.
