Yes, you should be hearing something, and yes, the C.& N.W. is now owned by
the U.P.. Try these: 160.890, 160.455 and 161.040. The Elgin, Joliet &
Eastern Rwy. also operates in your area and they're at 160.350 and 161.550.
I grew up in Barrington, IL in the mid 1960's (population 6000!) and these
were very active then. Times change of course and Metra may be using their
own channels by now. I'll see what I can find. The Wisconsin Central
(former Soo Line) may operate on former Soo frequencies 161.370, 161.520 or
on 160.785, 160.260 or 161.295. The small "Freddies" (Flashing Rear End
Device) that replaced cabooses are usually on 457.9375 on most railroads, but
they have only a 5 Watt transmitter in most cases.
