But incorrect, actually.
Sorry to weigh in on this late, but there are a number of routers on the
market with a 9-pin serial connection for dialing external V.92-type
modems in the event the primary "WAN" interface (AKA
"high-speed" is
down or otherwise offline...).
SMC made the Barricade router for several years the SMC7004AWBR had
everything you're asking about, if I'm reading your messages right. I
used to run one here without the wireless portion (no need for it,
personally, as I don't have a laptop, and prefer gigabit ethernet within
the house).

You can probably find something on eBay at this point - if they're not
still making current models with the external-modem fallback option.
