My son, the (now) online gamer, runs an original XP that has never been
patched. He goes through a Linksys router and runs the free version of
ZoneAlarm (?) on his box. He never uses IE or LookOut etc, and has had no
problems that I know of (other than what one expects with any MSWin product).
According to the head guy in charge of writing the base OS for XP, the only
spyware he gets (since he knows all the hidden and secret settings to adjust)
is the one MS plants every month when he checks for updates. He promptly
removes it, of course. He also uses ZoneAlarm I believe, and uses IE but keeps
strict control over it (since he knows how); he recommends Firefox for most
users.
He's a former student of mine, which somewhat pains me to admit, and is now
back here after retiring for health reasons. Since he can well afford to live
where he wants, I was quite surprised when he showed up here. Apparently,
things here changed more in 20 years than he thought remotely possible. He's
continually shocked by the extremist fanaticism in Kansas today. I won't be
surprised if his physician tells him to move for his health, again.
