I am hardly close to being an 'expert' either.
But, I did mistakenly use a 40wire cable with a new high speed drive and
did not get, 
in my case, a proper bios response.  Switching to the proper cable solved
the problem.

I have found that some drive/interface connections are sensitive to the
cable quality, 
re: interference/crosstalk.
