I disagree.
I think that TSE professional would be more viable than TSE jr. While TSE
is a fine editor I doubt that many would put it to enough use to justify the
cost. On the other hand, making SAL available would be justifiable
because today there is a scarcity of good inexpensive programming
options for writing those little macros that assist us in our day to day
processing choirs. In my search I've found Pocket Lisp and Basice for
developing directly on the HPC, neither of which can be considered
professional developer packages. For remote development there is the
GNU professional C++ toolkit and the Windows CE SDKs for VB 5, VC++
5, and Java all of which are way past overkill for what I want to do.
The MS-DOS option is only a stop gap measure to fill the current
software void. If TSE is to compete in tomorrow's world there needs to
be a real port of the software. If you are arguing that HPCs are too small
to be useful then I would retort that they are rapidly bulking up. This year
the manufacturers will begin offering color and more and more ram
(>100meg). We will probably see HPCs sporting small high capacity
optical or magnetic devices in the near future. Case in point, consider
the Toshiba Libretto 50CT which runs Windows 95 in color!
