subject: Cast Iron Kettles

JR> I recently managed to obtain an old cast iron kettle that

FWIW, I always sealed my cast iron skillets by burning grease on
them (Crisco). It works well.
This coating usually gets repeated about once a year.
I put some Crisco in the skillet and I rub it into the outside,
too. I put the skillet on the burner, put the burner on high, and
let it burn for awhile. (Don't forget to run the hood fan) I swish
the grease around in the pan, once in awhile.
 Hope that this helps.
 Later.
