DLL's are Dynamic Link Libraries. They are repositories for numerous
¨functions that may be used by multiple applications and in fact provide
¨most of the functions that create windows etc. DLL's are created in C,
¨Assembler language, Pascal, Fortran and any other language that supports
¨them. Essentially, the programmer creates a program containing the
¨functions he wishes to place in the DLL and a short initialization bit at
¨the front. Compiles it to a DLL making those functions available to any
¨program that calls them. Basically, in a program, you declare the
function, ¨naming the library it exists in and when you compile your
program, it links ¨those declarations and calls in such a way that the
program knows to look ¨outside of itself for that particular routine, which
it loads as needed. In ¨this way, much duplicated code is avoided and
program size is generally ¨greatly reduced.
