Agreed (and just proved), but why?  If, for some obscure reason, I wish to
use 01 in a message, I certainly don't want Msged arbitrarily altering it
for me.  I'm not sure that earlier versions did an automatic translation
either.

Damn right, too.  There are 256 characters available, and I want to be able
to use ALL of them, not just those which somebody else reckons is OK.
