| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] Large IDE drive |
Hello Andre First I should mention that there is a distinct difference between ignorance and stupidity. Ignorance is fixable Stupidity is to the bone. You are certainly the former rather than the latter or you would never have even gotten past some OS/2 installs, let alone understand the value (at the very least at one time) of SCSI, and some might say how that has been eclipsed by modern IDE/ATA drives. Since you did not cave to convention or flames and decided to try IDE/ATA for yourself, there has to be a working brain in there. So, don't despair. I think you're almost there. Within the bios setup utility there should be either under the "Advanced" section or in it's own "Peripherals" section (some older bioses even had "Chipset" for the most part, back when AMI, Phoenix, and Award were separate and very different had a separate "autodetect ide drives" or "peripherals" section) there will be a list of the IDE controllers, Primary and Secondary at the least. These will have options like either "Enable/Disable", "Enable Primary" "Enable Both" or something like that. There may also be a line to "enable/disable/auto" such pertinent items as DMA, LBA, SMART and such. There might even be on a PIII board a line to activate and set a delay time for IDE disks. These are all associated with the motherboard's chipset which includes IDE/ATA controllers and must be checked to see if they are active or not. If not, enable the controller(s) required first. You can worry about DMA, SMART and such after this is successful. NOTE: when you enable the controller(s ) you will have to reset (exit saving changes) to re-POST after enabling in order to detect the drive(s). This is very likely the problem since you have no need for such doings within bios (or at least the mobo's bios) for SCSI. You're just not used to all the enabling necessary. I've seen bioses with three (3) different items on three different sub-sections required to get IDE working. Fortunately that's rare but do look through all the subsections in setup. This should likely do the job.
