MM> really don't understand why you guys are getting so hot under

Judging by the reasonable responses you have received, I can't
agree that anyone is or has been getting hot under the collar.
MM> I guess you are one of those people who could not possibly have

You guessed wrong. But I don't believe that one could possibly
discern a standard in the haphazard typesetting practices of those early
years. According to your own statements, you found a noticeable
variation in the spacing used in these older texts.
MM> then you will get the point that I am trying to make: the

That is not the general consensus. I don't believe you will find more
than a period followed by a single space in any book that has been
published since the beginning of this century. (Except, of course, in
those cheap text books that amount to nothing more than copies of
manuscripts written on a typewriter.) That, to me, would be more
indicative of a "standard" - and is widely supported by authors who have
written on the subject of publishing, not to mention those who publish
books - than the claims you have make.
P.S. I just checked my collar temperature and it's perfectly normal.
