Most easy for first time:

http://ecomstation.com -> community -> Icon IRC chat

When you are on #ecs you can tell chatzilla that it should open the 
chat automatically when it gets started next time.

You can even open multiple chats (on multiple servers) in parallel and 
then switch between them.
