BL> I think you'll find that Dieter's '01 and '04 will be in your
BL> packet if you look at it with a hex editor.
BG> It certainly is, Ollie.
That's another fine mess Paul's gotten us into.
BL> It's MsgEd that is translating the '01 to {at}.
BG> Agreed (and just proved), but why?
I have no idea. It makes some sort of sense to prevent a user
entering '01 lines, since other mailers may interpret them at a
control line or remove the entire line, but it makes *no* sense to
stop you seeing them on your screen in message text.
BG> If, for some obscure reason,
BG> I wish to use 01 in a message, I certainly don't want Msged
BG> arbitrarily altering it for me. I'm not sure that earlier
BG> versions did an automatic translation either.
Paul believes that FTS-1 does not allow you to enter '01 (or '00) in
message text. If you enter '00, your message will trucate, your packet
will fall apart with an extra field and be dumped, so that much is
self-evident.
BG> Damn right, too. There are 256 characters available, and I want
BG> to be able to use ALL of them, not just those which somebody
BG> else reckons is OK.
And so you can... except '00 which in PKT format is used to define
the ends of fields in the header and the messages themselves. An '01
at the beginning of a line also indicates a control line, and most
readers will remove the entire line.
Regards,
Bob
