"Ah," said Del. "It's the old fight or flight pattern."
"Meaning?" asked Ruby.
"Well, the government does not know how to deal with this so it
runs away. Congress never adjourns so much as it retreats."
"They already dealt with this," said Ruby. "They said you can't
smoke funny stuff. Funny stuff gets all in your brain and next thing you
know you're robbing 7-11's with sawed-off shotguns and pantyhose on your
head. You're stealing and lieing and cheating all to support your habit.
Funny stuff makes you crazy," said Ruby.
"Marijuana has many useful and necessary functions, Ruby, and it
has a rather large following smoking for the enjoyment of it alone. All
those people aren't robbing 7-11's."
"Yet," said Ruby. "The Government says it's just a matter of
time."
"The Government says a wealth of stuff that makes no sense,
Ruby. There are actually people who get up and exist through the day,
for days on end, making their lives' work the pursuit of feverishly
examining the lives of other people for wrong-doing. They spend
years and gazillions of dollars doing this. Those are Government people,
Ruby. It's like a marauding band of C.P.A. people with paperclip
counters mixed in abundantly. You can neither believe them nor listen to
them," said Del. "They exist to justify themselves and never quite
manage that. It is distressing, at best."
"But they're the Government," said Ruby.
"Exactly," said Del. "When faced with indisputable proof of the
medicinal properties of marijuana, they scoot it under the desk
blotter. When defied by medical logic, they adjourn."
"What do they do when they adjourn?" asked Ruby.
"They go home and quietly smoke behind closed doors and
occasionally one stupidly emerges in a frenzy and kills the neighbor's
pig," said Del.
"I ain't never heard about none of them killing pigs," said
Ruby.
"You are obviously unfamiliar with the Kennedy family," said
Del.
