Here is the latest news from Scouting in Canada's Capital.
Effective 1 SEP 97, National Capital Region and St.Lawrence Region will merge
to form the 4th largest entity in Canadian Scouting. Only the Provincial
Councils of Ontario, Alberta, and British Columbia are larger.
The youth voted on the name "1st Canadian Region" for the new region. There
are problems with using this name, and an equitable solution has not yet been
found. More to come on this.
With the new Region, each member will be paying $1.80 of his registration
fee, to support Great Northern Region, and Northwestern Ontario Region. This
is a significant increase over previous years.
Again, this year, Scouts-Canada is providing an Exhibition Service Corps to
serve at the Central Canada Exhibition. This corps provides services for
child identification, lost children services, and first aid. The Service
Corps has been active since the late 1940's.
Overall, Scouting is on a big upswing in Ottawa, with over 12,000 members in
the region. Sucessful registration drives, showing campfire celebrations at
shopping malls, and MANY community service projects have boosted the already
well established Scouting tradition firmly in the eyes of the residents of
Ottawa-Carleton.
We look forward to another very sucessful Scouting year in Ottawa-Carleton.
Good Scouting to you.
