I have xp-pro running decently as a guest in vpc on eCS 1.2. It
seems to me that xp calls home not to revalidate but to provide
patches to the system. Some patches require validation and if you
do not have a real version then it fails to patch and you will
continually be reminded of your transgressions.

You don't have to run it patched. You just alter the automatic
updates to turn updates off. You said your computers were
standalone but didn't say if they had internet connectivity. Since
you mention call home they must be capable of getting online.

I usually don't access the internet with xp under vpc (although it
is set up to do so). I just use it to run an app or two that I
have to occasionally run. Most of the patches for xp seem to deal
with internet security. I figure as long as I have a good firewall
and don't use IE or a mail program I don't have to be concerned
with the patches. I have updates turned off because I found that
once in awhile an update will break vpc. Since I don't need
internet connectivity with xp then there is no reason for me to run
the updates and thus I have less time devoted to maintenance of the
image if an update happens to screw it up.

I also a win2k image. I don't recall at what SP level, maybe it is
6. Updates have broken this image so I have it turned off. I have
found that if I were to load only a single update, then shutdown
vpc and restart it that I could laborously work through all the
updates. Like above, I don't feel this is worth my time. So I
don't update it. Actually, I only keep it around because it is
what my father runs and if I have to walk him through something it
is a lot easier to do if I have this image to give him click by
click instructions to guide him. At 85 it's pretty tough to get
him through it when he messes something up.
