Hi Bill,
I received your message in the Travel echo. Thank you for posting that.
Now I know that mail can get through. The problem is mail getting out.
I gave a short reply to your message there, but since I think there's a
good chance you won't get it, I'll write here instead where I know
things are more predictable. If you get that message, tell me.
Otherwise I'm going to ask the sysop to check it out.
I don't get the bike and Travel echos on the same BBS, so I can't change
the area and move the message using my offline reader. I have to do
this from memory. And at our age, well...... :-)
Around here bikes, walkers, and inline skaters all use the same paved
trails. We all have to learn to share, but it can be a problem when
it's busy. Many bikers go top speed and that can be dangerous. I had
my 4 year old grandson out for a ride earlier this fall, and he isn't
yet fully aware of the "rules of the road." A couple times he almost
got it by a fast bike and after that I decided that isn't the place for
him just yet. You really have to be defensive out there at times and
let others know of your presence. Best times are during the week in the
late afternoon.
I haven't heard of the Pacific Crest Trail for hiking. But the national
parks *are* nice for hiking. This fall we went to the Grand Canyon
Nat'l Park. Their trail is 5000 feet down, and 5000 feet back up.
. Pretty rough. And would you believe that some have tried it on
a mtn bike??? They had to post a sign that it was prohibited.
There are some nice long distance bike trails here as well. Missouri, I
believe, has one called the Katy trail that runs the length of the
state. I'm not sure if it's complete yet, but I understand they do have
the land. The state of Wisconsin has trails that go almost the width of
the state. I think they are the king of states for trail system. They
aren't paved, however.
Our bike club here is having a hike on a bike trail New year's Day.
It's supposed to be warm so I think I'll go. They've done this in local
forest preserves as well, and then there's always a stop for breakfast
or lunch afterward as a group. It's fun. Used to be only biking and
skiing for the club and now they've introduced other activities.
Time to go. Watch for that message in Travel. TTYL,
Leah
