saying:
Having confronted Dr. David, Ed Grinnell, International Man Of Mystery,
exclaimed:
DGR> today. It's only a matter of time before I go for a coaching
 DGR> certificate.
EG> Excuse me? I'm sorry but several of the coaches that I know are stupid
EG> as hell and don't even know the rules of the games that they're
EG> coaching. Don't equate that certificate with anything of value.

I know little of American standards, but without the passing the
NCCP here in Canada I can not coach any sport. The NCCP requires me to
understand the basics of the game, the ability to teach it to others, and
to prepare those players for the next step in their sporting career.
The standards up here are very stringent for coaches.
If you are as truly knowledgeable about sports why aren't you
coaching in order to challenge yourself as well as give young minds some
of your experience?

DGR> Odd considering the '70s was the time of the bench clearing brawls
DGR> (which were eliminated in the early '80s) and the record setting PIMs
DGR> that it took 20 years for you to be fed up with it.
EG> Maybe you should read what I wrote instead of reading INTO it. I was
EG> fed up with it LONG AGO. It's only been recently that I cut off nearly
EG> all my ties to the NHL (and that consists of knowing who won the
 EG> Stanley Cup).

Pure semantics. Either way you still kept watching. Why were you
torturing yourself?

DGR> You're I'm going to disagree, surely you didn't think they kept
DGR> John Ferguson for his playing ability?
EG> PUHleeze. Compared to the rest of the teams in the NHL, these guys
EG> were sissies. Toronto had more goons in a couple of years than
EG> Montreal had in a decade.

Montreal sissies? Hah! Don Cherry tells a different story and he
had to coach against those guys!

DGR> The Flyers would not have won those cups had they also not had
DGR> superb talent in the likes Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, and Bernie
 DGR> Parent.
EG> AND the intimidation factor. Parent made up for a hell of a lot. That
EG> team had talent but it wasn't as talented as others (If it was, they
EG> wouldn't have needed the goons).

Not as talented? In addition to the above players I mentioned they
also had Bill Barber, Rick MacLeish, Gary Dornhoffer, and blue line corps
that consisted of Moose Dupont, and the Watson brothers Jimmy and Joe.
But you need the toughness to go with the talent. Look at Colorado last
year, they traded away Chris Simon and they got pushed around by Detroit
in the semi-finals. If your best players can't be the best players then
you can't win. The Flyers for two years had the talent to win and the
toughness to back it up, after the talent faded all they were was tough
and that took them nowhere. Not such a black and white issue is it?

DGR> I know doesn't count.) There you go, your argument isn't without
DGR> merit from a dry statistical point of view.
EG> Dry, statistical point of view, my fanny. It's valid from every angle

Sorry your fanny is not a valid discussion point...

EG> available. The game's had too many goons for my tastes and that's why
 EG> I don't give a rat's butt about the NHL. I think that a league has its

So why whine about it? Besides how can you claim their are too many
goons if you don't watch it? Where are you stats to back up your point?

EG> priorities screwed up when it hands out a 1/2 season suspension for
EG> someone who has been popped for drugs but doesn't give the same kind
EG> of penalty to someone who carves up another player like a steak.
Oh, I see, I thought you hated the fighting, in fact you hate the
high sticking, the slashing, the spearing. Well who the hell does?
Using your stick is not being tough, it's being a weasel, and the only
effective way of taking care of weasels is to pop them one, because they
sure don't give a rat's butt about suspensions.
BTW only two players have ever been suspended for drug use Bob
Probert (twice) and Grant Fuhr and both players where given a year's
suspension for each offense.
                                        Sincerely Yours

                                        David G. Riess
