In general, this is true.  However, humans are not infallible, so a bit of
help never hurts.  I allow binaries on the scoug-help mailing list, and
every now an then someone forgets that there are still dial-up users out
there.

The pci.exe output confirms that your audio chipset is not visible as a
pci device.  You might want to hunt about with the Thinkpad utilities
(i.e. ps2.exe here) and see what it has to say about the audio.

BTW, do you have Windows installed on this box?  If so, does the audio
work for Windows?
