My new E2864 went catatonic today, and I had to power cycle it.  I remember 
someone else mentioning a similar problem.  I know this is devilishly 
difficult to debug, but for what it's worth here's what was going on at the

then death.  Note that after the "Timeout" occurred there was no modem status 
report, so I think the modem was already going weird at that point.
I'm using the 1.04 firmware that was shipped in the modem.
