Cool, that was the bike I was about to buy before I decided on my 
mongoose comp-SX.  I agree with you about cars passing you, especially
on the highways.  Still using grip-shift or have you opted to upgrade
to shimano rapid fire?  I had grip-shift for a short while and HATED
it (constant shift delays, money needed to improve performance etc.)
So now I have all the goodies with rapid fire like a bassworm, stronger
derailleur spring, and a "cog-hog" pulley.  So my shifting is what I
consider "superb" ;^/
... A short cut is the longest distance between two points.
