One handy product I've discovered is something called Voice It.  I found
it at Office Depot although I'm sure many consumer electronics and office
supply stores sell it or similar products.  The device is about the size
of a credit card and allows you to record short messages for later
retrieval.  The product comes in different models and some of the advanced
versions have a feature known as channels where you can divide messages
into different categories.  This product wasn't built for folks that are
blind so does require that you learn the buttons to control it but it
works great and is much less than some of the adaptive products intended
for the same purpose.
