Hello Maurice.

The lores mode has bigger fonts than that... size-wise it's 18x32 on a
720x400 raster (but it's really just the normal 9x16 VGA font with
larger (2x2 sized) pixels) you get a display that's 40 characters wide
and 12 high. but the font is driven by the video hardware which helps
compatibilty with DOS software that pokes directly to the screen...

IIRC you can get the exact same result under linux using the "svgatextmode"
software, but I don't know of any full-screen editors (etc) for
linux that support a 40 column display.

Linux frambuffers seem to get worse with every new version. With a 2.2
kernel I could get 256 colours, with 2.4 only 16 colour mode will work,
with 2.6 it doesn't work at all. perhaps with a 2.0 kernel I can run it in
hicolor mode ? :)
