RS> Wot happened on Friday am ?

PE> I was asleep in the am.

So whats the story on your modem, how long has the one that was
in use then been in use for, with that rom version etc in use ?

PE> It was raining though.

Wasnt it on Sat am too ? It looked rather spectacular on the evening news.

RS> Absolutely atrocious modem sessions, lot more than
RS> just one too. The damned thing was continually doing
RS> full retrains, and the last session even ended up at 4800.

PE> Well, the person after you at 7am, received stuff from me, no
PE> problems, >100%. And the person before your set, Dave Hatch, at
PE> 6am, sent me stuff fine at 128% (obviously trained up from 26400).

Yeah, presumably your modem managed to go berko just
with mine for some reason. Like I said, mine worked fine
to my ISP just after that, just like it always does.

In fact I managed to leave it on to the ISP overnight last
night, total of 17 hours online would you believe, not a blemish.

RS> I didnt bother to comment until I had checked that I was still
RS> getting my usual good results with my ISP incase it was a problem
RS> at my end, but it was the usual immaculate result over a few hours.

PE> Your ISP is local though, isn't he?

Thats irrelevant today. With a decent modern exchange its on fibre optic
between the exchanges so it doesnt matter a damn. Its the local lines
between the exchange and the modem and the modems that matter now.

RS> This am was just as good as it ever is with you, no blemishes at all.

PE> Certainly looks like something to do with the STD link.

Thats mad, you have just seen it work fine the next day on an STD link.

PE> Both the before and after were local callers.

Its much more likely to be some odd interaction quirk between the modems,
not seen at a particularly high frequency. Tho its certainly rather odd
that I got that three sessions in a row on Friday am and even odder that
yours was demanding full retrains all the time, when it should have been
doing a fallback if it didnt like what it saw of the line.
