AT> I'd suggest trying it out at an actual job.
Then again, unless your band plays in only one place all the time, that's not
100% either.
AT> to the job, they pick up dimmer noise from the lighting
Get better dimmers, or put the dimmers farther away (which you should be
doing in the first place), all pretty basic there.
AT> or even radio traffic from planes/truckers/police/etc.)
I haven't heard a wireless do that in ages, unless it was one of the old
really cheapo 49mHz units. Usually, when you hear RF interference, it's more
in the realm of "noise" than actually hearing some trucker yelling "Breaker
One Nine!" thru your rig.
We played at Groton, CT (where the nuclear subs are built) with BadCo, and
there is sooooo much RF there, everything from ultra-HF to ultra-LF stuff,
that my rig made a constant "growling" noise. Nothing you could do about
it... just too much radio going on at once in one place. (Which is why you
always have a cable standing by) Also, interference will change from day to
night, depending on what radio stations are near you, since many (mainly AM
stations) switch antenna arrays from day to night. Many is the time I've had
noise during the day, but by showtime (usually about 9am-ish), it's gone.
AT> With the increase of digital electronics on stage, I worry that these
AT> noise sources could be a problem as well. Will the harmonics from the
AT> Ensoniq's CPU clock interfere, for example?
My rack with both The Cult and BadCo had a lot of digital stuff in it, and
the wireless units were about 3 inches from them. No problem. The one
digital item that -did- give me problems was a "repeater box" (sort of a line
amplifier) for the Vari*Lite system. I solved that by forcing the lighting
crew to re-run their cabling and repeater boxes farther from my rack.
