Hi Ken, it's not likely that you would lose your data because of a low
battery, the display will usually go quite dim before that happens.
Some computers even allow you time to change batteries before losing
data. In other words the memory will last a short period of time without
power before being wiped out.

Erratic operation of the computer is probably due to the gap between the
magnet and the pickup being to great.  About 1mm is usually recommended.
