Hi Kevin,
I'm not going to suggest a specific make of board, I think several other
people will do that but rather make some general comments that I hope will
help.
I guess it depends which country you're in as to what is avialable. We hear of
some boards in the US that are never imported to Australia and I suspect
vice-versa.
If you are willing to go for a motherboard with NO onboard video, sound or
networking, then compatibility should be an easy task ! The problems come when
one tries to get that integrated function working under OS/2 or eCS (eCS 1.14
means eCS 1.1 with Fixpack 4 applied, by the way).
Athlon 2100+, DDR 3200 RAM should be available everywhere.
You're right about it being difficult to get a motherboard with an ISA slot on
in, but they DO still exist - you'll have to search around a bit though.
Floppy controllers on motherboards support both 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drives, so
that's not a problem.
IDE or ATA drive interfaces could be an area of concern, usually DANI drivers
will handle most recent chipsets - the key here is NOT to go for the very
latest, fastest, spec controller, for the advancement over 6 months or 1 year
old technology you'll pay over the odds for the improvement and may have driver
problems.
What physical drive(s) you buy is not a motherboard question although they will
of course need to be compatible with the motherboard and make sure you buy the
full spec connecting cables, not the cheaper ones as they will most likely not
be rated for the drive speed and WILL give you problems !
Perhaps the best thing is if you have local computer fair with several dealers
attending, you can go around and compare options and prices.
Cheers/2
Ed.
