That is normal for a 6 volt system. The draw on the system is more than the
battery can supply and you're forever charging them. You might consider
switching over to 12 volts. All you need to do is replace all the bulbs, have
the generator rebuilt for 12 volt operation and put 6 volt dropping resistors
into all the instrument gauge circuits and turning the battery around for -12
volt operation. You can then also put newer amenities into the car such as
AM/FM cassette radios, CB radios, etc.
As for myself, since my '47 Ford will see very little use, I'm going to leave
it the way it is.
