it does, but in such a way that the RAM image and the actual file are
connected so that modifying one automatically modifies the other.

that still happens, because rm doesn't erase files, it only removes them
from directories,  the file system driver gets to decide which pieces of
hard drive space are no-longer needed. and it hangs onto the but with the
rm binary until rm is no longer needed.
