I was asked to analyse the System event log file from a computer that had crashed. The file could not be opened - Event Viewer said "corrupted". Anyway, after several hours of fiddling about, I found the simple cause (and, no, it wasn't the fix that pops up in Google). During this time I found that an event log file records each timestamp in local time (as the number of seconds since start 1970). Furthermore, my Event Viewer (after I had fixed the file) showed timestamps like 10:20am, but the actual time in the file was 11:20am (one hour later). Some DST madness, I assume.
