| subject: | 8-bit LPT cable |
JEAN PARROT wrote to KEN HRYNCHUK on 10-05-04 08:23: JP> Let us know how you do make out. Well, Jean, I tried this (approx. 20 foot) cable configuration (including the 8-bit wires, of course ), which I obtained from File Maven 3.5a's .docs: DB25M DB25M ----- ----- 1 ------------- 1 <-- 8-bit only 2 ------------- 15 3 ------------- 13 4 ------------- 12 5 ------------- 10 6 ------------- 11 10 ------------- 5 11 ------------- 6 12 ------------- 4 13 ------------- 3 14 ------------- 14 <-- 8-bit only 15 ------------- 2 16 ------------- 16 <-- 8-bit only 17 ------------- 17 <-- 8-bit only 25 ------------- 25 I tried it with File Maven 3.5a, and could not get it to work in 8-bit mode, but it worked just fine for 4-bit transfers. I also tried it with LapLink Pro v4.0, with the same results. I tried both programs in 'straight DOS', as well as in a DOS window, and I also tried setting the LPT ports on both machines to 'standard parallel' mode. I've triple- checked my wiring (and, I even added my own foil shielding to the cable, because the original shielding wouldn't fit over the new 'lump'). I've yet to try it with 'real' legacy ports, though; maybe that would solve the mystery (?). I'm considering trying another cable configuration, but I may not, because it's a lot of bother, considering the speeds involved. Oh, well; at least I have a longer 4-bit cable, now.
