subject: Assembly Books

JV>I have several books, the one bound with duct tape is probably the one

Surely you must be joking. I found this book utterly useless for a
newcomer. Although the book clearly states in its Preface that the book
if for beginners without prior Assembly experience, nothing could be
further from the truth. Much of the book is a reference--which wouldn't
make much since to a newcomer--and the rest is nothing more than code
fragments. Even most of the C callable routines from TASM using the
simplified model directive, doesn't work correctly. This is because it
is used in the wrong place!
If the newbie is planning on using TASM, I'd surely recommend Tom Swan's
Mastering Turbo Assembler. This book will give him all the details of
the language and at the same time provide him with usable functions
(string library, etc.) that all assembly language programmers will/can
us at some point in time. I'd also recommend Harley Hahn's Assembly
Inside & Out to accompany Tom's book. It will provide code pseudo-code
for utilizing for/loop, while, do/until, if, if/else, if/else ladder,
and using a switch decision block.
If the guy is real lucky, he might be able to find a copy of Robert
LaFore's, Assembly Language Primer for the IBM PC/XT. This book will
introduce him with using DOS DEBUG first, then moving on to MASM.

I'll agree with you on this one. I seem to prefer the books more so than
spending hours reading a computer screen. After all, you can't take
your computer too the bathroom and read too easily.
All-in-all, I think I'd recommend buying Borland C++ 3.1, since it comes
with an excellent C/C++ compiler, Assembler, Debugger, and Profiler.
Borland may even sell this still. If not, I'm sure there are users
selling theirs around...
