Actually upon further investigation, it looks like we were both right.  
I created a tree 3 levels deep and put files in them all.  I set the 
read only attribute on the files and the directories.  I ran the script 
and it removed the attributes from the files but not the first level 
directory.  It did, however, upon checking remove it from the 
subdirectories.
