-> I understand there are 2 ways to install NT ... on HD as is .. or
-> letting NT format the drive ... I would like to know the advantages
-> and disadvantages of both methods ???
There's an option to convert your current FAT partition over to NTFS;
NTFS is exclusive to NT, but allows you to implement NT's file level
security. File level security means that if you have 5 files in a
directory, you could specify which users could access certain files -
where a FAT partition you can only specify the permissions across a
particular directory.
At 200mb you're at the baseline for considering a NTFS partition.
(depending on who's book you're reading, some say 400mb) Your disk
size will be a serious limitation if you plan on using several apps with
WinNT...
And, once you format the partition as NTFS, you'll need to boot to NT
in order to read the drive. (DOS can't read NTFS)
-> The purpose of Intalling NT is to learn how it works ... I imagine I
-> should have a 3Com Ethernet card in the pc for full features
-> intallation ... or do I realy need it ???
You _can_ use the "MS Loopback Adapter" to allow you to simulate the
installation of network protocols and services, but if you have 2
machines you might as well just install a real network card. 3com makes
an excellent card, either ISA or PCI, but if you're looking for
something on a trial basis you could use a brand like LinkSys who sells
"network in a box" giving you two network cards and cabling for $75-ish.
(just add the network OS, which you have with the NT)
