subject: Vacumm leak?

Last saturday I installed an Edelbrock Performenr manifold on my '78 olds 88
(75k 350 '4'). On Sunday while starting it for the first time, i noticed
some smoke coming out of the hood. I turned it off immediately and noticed
that the lead to my TACH terminal (which is hooked up to a diagnostic box)
light up. i burned myself trying to disconnect it, hence it disconnected
itself. this did not do any harm to the engine though. my problem is that i
have a vaccum leak somewhere, and I cannot figure out where it is. Last year
about this time it was acting this same way (rough idle, will stall, after
turned off will smell 'gassy') and it turned out to be that the EGR valve was
not sealed right. I have a right to believe that is again the case because i
believe one of the bolt holes to be stripped, but the EGR feels solid on it's
mount.
everything is hooked up (all smog equipment cept for snorkel air cleaner and
smog pump) and working for all i know. the carb is a quadrajet 750, never
been rebuilt. Ive been offered to buy a holley 650 spread bore for this car,
but i still haven't made up my mind. Is it a good buy? my only question is
can it be smogged in CA?
(also i believe this new gas is making it run like crap also, oxygenated AND
reformulated)
