CP> I have just checked the settings in FMail (the tosser) and found that the
CP> settings for AUST_TRADING are identical to the settings for LOCUSER. These
CP> two echos are passed on to Teddy and should therefore have the same
CP> settings.
Why are you passing AUST_TRADING on to Teddy? LOCUSER is OK, there's no
way she can get it from anywhere else (within reason), but AUST_TRADING she
should be getting from her normal source. In fact, why are you getting it
from me instead of her? It's quite obvious she is able to get it through
the normal channels, that's why I got 180 message hurtling back at me!
CP> Is AUST_TRADING the only echo that you are receiving duplicate messages in?
Yes, that I noticed anyway. It's more than just dupes, it's a matter of
there being 180 messages. Unless you have become the entire Tasmanian
feed, there shouldn't be any messages other than yours coming back at me.
> and most out of spec.
CP> Could you please advise in what manner the messages were out of spec??
CP> Maybe a sample would assist in this regard.

CP> I was under the impression that my sessions with you were password
CP> protected. In what way would a password protect stop the sending of
CP> duplicate messages
Because if I set your password to "fred", then you would not be
able to connect to me. After the modems had connected, I would hang up on
you.
> And then what do you plan to do so that this won't happen
> again?
CP> I am at a loss to explain *why * it has started happening, but with the
CP> echo disconnected I cannot trace any faults.
The fault is you exporting it to Teddy.
CP> Could you please reconnect the echo, and I will do the following.....
CP> 1. Disconnect Denise from the feed (this will remove one possible cause)
This is the cause.
CP> 2. Manually inspect all outgoing packets from my system to you, to ensure
CP> that they only contain AUST_TRADING messages that have been entered
CP> onto my system
Yes, that will protect me.
CP> This should prove whether my system is the cause or not.
If you had done that, you would have found 180 messages, that weren't
written by you, to come back at me.
CP> If the duplicate problem is not evident then ....
CP> 3. After a number of days with no problems, I can reconnect Denise and
CP> then manually inspect all outgoing packets for AUST_TRADING messages
CP> that do not originate from Denises system.
Please don't reconnect Denise. It is highly unlikely she wants you to
supply her with that echo. There is no reason for her to want it. You can
only choose one host for an echo like that, me or her. I would suggest
her. Why you want to pay STD charges for a trading echo you can get
locally is beyond me.
CP> This would prove that the errors were occuring somewhere down stream of
CP> myself, and I could advise Denise of the problem and disconnect the feed
CP> to her until the problem can be located.
CP> Is the above plan acceptable to you ???
Yes, whilst ever you are manually making sure you don't send me large
amounts of garbage, there is no problem with experimenting. BTW, I
reconnected you to AUST_TRADING just now, as you requested. When you see
the light and decide to get it from Teddy instead, you can deselect from me
FIRST, then WAIT for acknowledgement and make SURE you delete me from your
export list, and then reconnect to Teddy.
CP> Apart from the above, can you advise me of any other measures I can take,
CP> in an endeavour to locate the cause of the problem.?
CP> Any advise would be welcome.
I think I have explained it above, let me know if you don't understand it.
> I don't run a secure system here. BFN. Paul.
CP> An explanation of a secure system would be appreciated, as I do not
CP> understand the term. Any explanation can only add to mylimited knowledge of
CP> mailing systems
Well, besides the password-protect of the session, you can normally just
disconnect someone from an echo, and as well as them not getting any mail
from you, they also can't send you any. I do not currently have the latter
ability, I expect that no-one will send me mail for an echo they have not
selected! I have protection against anyone doing something like that
maliciously, they simply cease to be a point. Which is why it's not a big
hole, so it's not high on my list of priorities.
CP> My sincerest apologies for creating a problem.
No worries. Just be careful with this being an echomail feed. It's fine
on LOCUSER, no-one knows or cares, but AUST_TRADING is a large echo. BFN.
Paul.
