Further to Jean's comment; MS DOS 6x, probably 5.0, and just possibly possibly 4.01 had a pair of primitive utilities (Interlnk.exe, and Intersrv.exe I think) which allowed connection through either the Laplink style prallel cable, or a null modem cable. I have no idea whether 4 or 8 bit, but I did have it working. The biggest drawback was that it did not run as a TSR, the server being locked in that mode while Intersrv running. It could be worse ...
