What browser are you using? Are you by chance using an ST as a machine? I 
noticed that you are using Kivi as an offline reader and I used to use it on 
my old ST also. If you are using an ST/STe the problem is definitly hardware. 
Those machines used a Motorolla 8250 for the UART, it's max reliable speed 
was only 19.2kbs. Binary transfers at higher speeds will be very unreliable, 
if not impossible. There are some docs floating around (I might even still 
have them) that show how to modify an ST for use with higher speed modems. 
One mod adds some circuitry to your machine and the other (a bit simpler) 
allows the modem to use the Midi port. Neither are very elegant and modifying 
an ST motherboard is a bit risky (they're made of cheap resin impregnated 
paper) due to the fragile nature of the circuit board.
