Subject: Free Talking Books and Adaptive Tape Player
What do you do during your PPS rest periods? I listen to talking books
that I receive for FREE from the Library of Congress, National Library
Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
The information below tells you about the service and how to get an
application. The service is available to residents of the United States
who are unable to read or use standard print materials because of visual
or physical impairment.
The service offers current best-selling fiction and non-fiction, as well
as a comprehensive collection of titles in history, biography, the
classics, drama, and science fiction. All books are complete and
unabridged. The tapes are recorded by professionals, some of whose voices
you will recognize from TV documentaries and commercials.
The National Library Service will even send you a FREE tape recorder that
is required to play the special-format tapes.
This service is a genuine labor of love -- the publishers and authors give
up their royalties on the these tapes so that disabled persons can enjoy
their books. In addition, the United States Postal Service pays postage
both ways, so there is no cost to us whatsoever. Enjoy!
