I think the Miami relatives and their advisors quite underestimated the
logic most people have that when dad does show up, there is now no
remaining reason to hold the child. They had some political advantage with
unsympathetic characters like the grandmothers but people tire of the
histrionics and they pushed their luck too far. Since their main goal is
the politics of it, they should have quit while they were ahead.
Heck, if they gave the child to the father promptly upon arrival, they
might even as a family have had better prospects of future reconciliation,
since Juan Miguel would have some reason to accept that they are
trustworthy and well meaning.
But if I were in his shoes now, any reason to trust them would have been
removed. They just did not know when to stop. Quite possibly the family
got locked into a situation where the circus around them really would not
let them yield.
