Hi Jim,
ALL SONYs CRTs are Trinitrons. They all have "Aperture Grilles" with the
Phosphor colours in continuous alternating RGB vertical stripes, unlike
any non-Trinitron CRTs, which use a "Dot-triad" of three dots in an
equilateral triangle pattern for RGB. Every Trinitron has no vertical
curvature, and prior to the FD-Wega series with absolutely plane
screens, always had lower horizontal curvature than others - i.e. it was
a section of a cylinder - whereas prior to the advent of the so-called
flat-square screen, every other CRT was a part of a sphere, with
consequent multiple reflections in all planes. Trinitrons also have a
polarizing filter which absorbs and reduces reflected incident light by
two-thirds., and have lower distortion than any other, especially in the
corners. One of the reasons they came as standard equipment with
high-end Graphics workstations like Silicon Graphics.
In 1969 Sony's Trinitron was the first piece of equipment *ever* to be
awarded an EMMY, for technical excellence.
In 1994, Sony allowed e.g. NEC/Mitsubishi/EIZO etc., to manufacture
Trinitron CRTs under licence. Prior to then the only other licenced
manufacturer was SEIKO, IIRC.
Hope that explains it well enough.
