My guess is that the power supply occupies almost as much space as the rest of the components together in most machines. All our machines except the notebook are in tower cases rather than in desktop cases, but it is possible to cram a great deal of computing power in a small space: 250GB of storage in a 3.5" drive, 1GB of RAM in a very small module, a DVD burner -- and many new machines no longer have a floppy drive.
